Why Are 30 Year Olds Still Living With Parents?
There are a lot of different reasons why someone may live at home with his or her parents, long beyond what our society often considers to be a normal age. Not everyone’s circumstances are the same. In some cases, perhaps the parents are ill and need care from the son or daughter. Perhaps the child needs extra care from the parents. But in other cases, and often the most likely, the child is simply not ready for financial or physical independence at an age most North Americans generally feel is normal.
In our society, many people move out from under their parents’ wing and gain independence as soon as they turn 18. Others stay at home until they reach the age of 30 and even beyond. In Italy and other places in Europe it is normal for people to live with their parents until they get married, which sometimes isn’t until age 33. In some parents’ opinion, allowing their children to stay at home until they’re ready allows them to save money and plan a better future to start their own families. It saves them from having to move out before they’re truly ready and forcing them to pay rent which could lead to financial troubles down the road.
In some cases, 30 year olds still living with parents may simply be late bloomers. I often hear the expression “30 is the new 20.” People are getting married later. People are having children later. I can see it in even some of my friends. I know people reaching 30 years of age who can’t even grow full facial hair. In other cases, I remember people in high school who could grow full sideburns by the time they were 15. Some people simply age a bit slower than others. Some people are just ready for complete independence at a younger age than others, while others naturally prefer to stay under the comfort of their parents’ home for longer. In North America it is generally considered taboo for 30 year olds to still live at home, especially for men. Many women view men who live at home in their late 20’s or early 30’s as “losers” or “mommy’s boys,” especially when many women find financially stable and independent men naturally attractive. If a 30 year old man living at home can’t even provide for himself, how is he supposed to provide for his girlfriend or wife?
It is really up to one’s opinion to determine the normal age for a child to move out of his or her parents’ home. However, as long as all parties are happy with the living arrangement, it should really be no concern of anyone on the outside looking in.
