Critically Important First Date Tips

It can be tough to find something interesting to do on a first date. You want to do something you will both enjoy, but you don’t want it to be the typical dinner and movie type of deal. Be creative and take time to think about what you should do. Typically, it’s up to the man to decide what to do, but perhaps it’s a good idea to talk about what you want to do together first. You should both go somewhere you are both comfortable, where you can talk and get to know one another. A date that consists of going to a movie and little else doesn’t really allow for much conversation, and therefore, little progress in moving forward.

Sometimes day-dates work best. It eases the tension that often comes with the more formal evening or dinner dates. Arrange a lunch date or go to the zoo. Or, if money is an issue, a simple walk in the park or on the beach is a great way to get to know each other. Grab a coffee. The main goal of a first date is to getting to know each other. You want the other person to feel comfortable around you, and sometimes less formal dates work best. Don’t overwhelm the person with romance. Compliment the other person on a clothing item or something about them that stands out to you. It will show them you care enough to think highly of them and will help them open up to you as you gain that comfort with one another. Kindness goes a long way.

Manners are extremely important on a first date. If you’re in a restaurant, it is common sense to behave well. Don’t only treat your date with respect, but treat others you interact with kindly. It will show the other person you care for others and that you have great social skills.

Focus on your date. Make eye contact. Listen to what he or she says. If you’re looking around the room and zoning off while your date is talking, it gives the impression you do not care for the person. If you get caught not listening to your date, especially if she is female, it could spell big trouble for the future of your relationship. People like to feel that what they think and say is important, and if you do not show that respect don’t expect to get it in return.

As far as appropriate clothing on a first date, use your judgment on where you’re going. Obviously, you’re not going to wear your best to the zoo and you’re not going to wear jeans and a t-shirt to a nice restaurant. The important thing is you dress comfortably and wear clothes that make you feel good. If you aren’t comfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show in how you act, walk and move. However, make sure what you wear looks good and is wearable in pretty much any setting your date may lead.
